Geography

Intent

At St Joseph’s our geography curriculum aims to inspire curiosity and help pupils understand the world around them. Through the Grammarsaurus Scheme of Work, we ensure children:

  • Gain secure knowledge of location, place, and physical and human geography.
  • Develop enquiry and critical-thinking skills when using maps, data and images.
  • Build awareness of different cultures and global issues, including sustainability.
  • Connect with their local environment through regular fieldwork and outdoor learning.

Our aim is for pupils to become informed, responsible and curious young geographers.

Implementation

We deliver geography through a clear and structured framework that supports progression across all year groups.

Key features include:

  • Enquiry-led units guided by big questions, with links to our local area.
  • Progressive skills development, including map reading, fieldwork techniques and data analysis.
  • Cross-curricular links to subjects like history, science and art to deepen understanding.
  • Practical fieldwork opportunities in the school grounds and local community.
  • Assessment for learning, using pop quizzes, discussions, pupil feedback and teacher assessment to guide next steps.

Impact

Our geography curriculum leads to:

  • Secure knowledge that pupils can recall, explain and apply to new situations.
  • High engagement, with pupils showing enthusiasm for lessons and fieldwork.
  • Strong geographical skills, especially in map work, data interpretation and vocabulary use.
  • Growing global awareness, with pupils able to discuss environmental and cultural issues confidently.

We monitor impact through assessments, learning walks, book looks, pupil voice and lesson observations.

Through the Grammarsaurus framework, we aim to develop confident and responsible young people who understand their world and how they can make a positive difference.
