Year 1 Welcome

Welcome to Year 1. This is where the children gradually make the transition from focusing on the Early Learning Goals to working within the National Curriculum, which will then take them right through their primary and secondary education.

The Year 1 curriculum builds on the Early Learning Goals and begins the work which will ultimately lead to the achievement of the three aims of the National Curriculum. These can be defined as to enable all young people to become:

  • Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve.
  • Confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives.
  • Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.

All the prescribed subjects are introduced with particular emphasis being laid on the basics of reading, writing, speaking and listening, numeracy, science and, of course, RE.

Please find below the termly curriculum overviews for parents: Autumn, Spring and Summer. Also you can find the National Curriculum relevant for this year group. There is also a document showing the skills to be learnt in this year groups foundation subjects. Should you need to know any further information please speak to the class teacher.

The children enjoy a variety of visitors in school including ‘Young Town Planners’ to support the work in geography and design and technology, hands on experience of a range of animals, and taster sessions in tennis and football. Their learning is further supported by the use of the local environment for ‘field work’, visits to church and other trips when possible – such as our outing to the pantomime in Lichfield.
